정서표현신념과 심리적 증상의 관계에서 정서표현양가성의 역할 = The Role of Ambivalence over Emotional Expression in the Link of Belief in Emotional Expression and Psychological Symptoms

The mechanism by which people get ambivalent over expressing emotions was explored. The study hypothesis involves that belief on emotional influences one's Ambivalence over Emotional Expression(AE). A total of 483 college students(292 women and 191 men) completed the research packet. Structure equation modeling was conducted to examine the relations among the subfactors of the BEE, AE, and psychological symptoms. The results revealed that instrumental-conventional belief led to low level of emotional expression, but not to inner conflict for emotional expression. On the contrary, people with high relational-emotional belief, presuming that their emotional expression leads to negative consequences in interpersonal relationships or emotional desire-satisfaction, showed high ambivalence over emotional expression. Although the relational-emotional belief affects the two subordinate factors of the AE, only the self-defensive ambivalence predicts maladjustment. The relational-emotional belief that emotional expression would negatively affect the interpersonal relationship predicts the AE, and especially self-defensive effort to keep themselves away from the negative consequences may lead to more severe maladjustment.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

정서 표현 억제를 동기화하는 내적 기제로써 정서표현에 대한 부정적 신념, 그리고 정서표현신념과 심리적 건강을 매개하는 정서표현양가성의 역할을 연구하였다. 대학생 483명(여자 292명)을 대상으로 설문을 실시하고, 구조방정식모형을 사용하여 정서표현신념, 정서표현양가성, 심리증상 간의 관계 모형을 검증하였다. 그 결과, 정서표현에 대한 부정적인 신념의 하위차원인 ‘도구관습적 신념’은 정서표현양가성에 영향을 미치지 않는 반면, 정서표현이 정서적 욕구를 충족시키지 못하며 대인관계에 부정적 결과를 가져올 것이라는 ‘관계정서적 신념’이 강할수록 정서표현양가성이 높았다. 또한 ‘관계정서적 신념’이 정서표현양가성의 두 하위요인 모두에 영향을 미침에도, ‘자기방어적 양가성’ 차원만이 심리증상과 정적으로 연결되었다. 이로써 부정적인 정서표현신념에 영향을 받은 ‘자기방어적 양가성’이 매개변인으로 작용하며 심리증상에 이르게 됨이 검증되었다. 이는 부정적인 대인관계 결과로부터 자신을 방어하고자 자신의 정서적 욕구를 억제하는 노력이 오히려 심리적 부적응을 초래할 수 있음을 시사한다.
