This qualitative study describes parent-role adaptation process of North Korean refugee parents in South Korea. Six parents were participated in the research. Participant observation and in-depth interview with parents and teachers were conducted at home and in school-settings.
The findings of this study indicate that North Korean refugee parents encountered and experienced difficult situations in not only home but also school context. Regarding the parent-child relationship at home, North Korean refugee parents have some troubles in adapting to the different way of child rearing in South Korea from in North Korea. Nevertheless. parents made their best efforts to change their ways of child-rearing in North Korea. But North Korean refugee parents felt constraint with their children to support and help their learning for school adaptation.
In conclusion, North Korean refugee parents in South Korea have been learning another way of child out of their own habits in order to survive in the new society. Consequently, we need to help North Korean refugee parents with comprehensive supporting system including individualized and effective parent education as well as with more strengthened parent-teacher relationships etc.
