The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanism through which mothers` feeling of parenting stresses impacts children`s internalized problems such as depression, anxiety, and withdrawal. We were particularly interested in the mediating effect of child neglect by mother on the relations between parenting stresses and children`s internalized problems in poor families. To investigate the mediating effect of child neglect, Sobel test and bootstrapping method based on structural equation modeling were used. The 141 families in poverty were recruited through referral wereuctmunity day care center located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. The result showed that the mediating effect of child neglect was statistically significant and accounted for the relationship between the mothers` stress and children`s outcomes. Child neglect mediated partially the effect of mothers` parenting stresses on children`s internalized problems. Practice and policy implications as well as further research topics were discussed to aid the search for highly effective preventive interventions.
