모의 취업이 아동발달에 미치는 영향 = The Effect of Maternal Employment on the Child Development

Maternal employment is an important life event to the child as like as family-poverty experiences, parents' unemployment, and the family dissolution. But, there are few studies concerning the effect of maternal employment on the child development in Korea. So this study examines the effect of maternal employment on the child development in Korea. Using the Korea Welfare Panel Study data, this study analyzes the effect of mother's employment, job status, employment hours, earnings, previous employment experiences.
This study's major findings are as follows.
We find no significant effect of mother's (un)employment on the child development consequences. But, mother's job status and earning has significant positive effects on the child's educational achievement, self-esteem, and dis-aggressions. Analyzing the effects of maternal employment by the subgroups, we find that the effects of maternal employment are very different according to the child sex, family poverty status, and family types. The positive effects of maternal employment are more salient to the girls, the children from the non-poor family and two-parents family.
This study findings suggest that mother's employment are not conflict with child developmental consequences. Negative attitudes to the maternal employment are necessary to change in Korea. For the better child developmental consequences and more active labor market participations of married women, government should introduce the policies supporting the working mother and their children.
