자기의 서사화와 진정성의 문제 : 임옥인의 〈일상의 모험〉을 중심으로 = Narrating the Self and Authenticity of Oneself ― Based on Ilsanguimoheom(the Adventure of Everyday Life) by Ok-In Lim

국문 초록 (Abstract)

임옥인은 정통적 장편소설기법에서 사소설양식으로 소설쓰기 방식을 바꾸어 나가는 ‘진정한 자기’ 추구의 궤적을 보여줌으로써 작가의 진정성 추구와 소설양식의 관계를 논의할 수 있는 작가다. 임옥인의 〈일상의 모험〉은 자기의 서사화 양식으로 사소설 기법을 택하여 글쓰기를 한 작품이며 타자에게 가슴을 열고, 대신 고통을 받거나 나누려고 노력하는, 글쓰기를 통해 새로운 주체 확립을 꾀한 소설이다. 임옥인의 자기의 서사화(Narrating the Self)는 일상적인 것, 망각지대의 소외된 주변인에 관심을 갖고 생활의 곤란이나 고통, 눈물에 직면해서 그것 속에서 진실을 찾아내려 한다. 이는 진정성추구양식인 자기의 서사화 전략이자 동시에 소설 양식이 작가의 사생활을 규율하는 결과이다. 글쓰기가 주인공의 삶을 선으로, 창조적으로 만드는 하나의 예다.
또한 진정성을 추구하는 임옥인의 글쓰기는 일종의 무의식, 아브젝트를 낳아 피, 똥, 해골, 시즙(屍汁), 나병, 광기, 우울증이 임옥인의 소설에 무수히 등장하게 한다. 이 아브젝트는 가부장제와 같은 체계와 질서의 모순에 파열을 가하는 전복 성을 지니며 임옥인소설의 진정성의 또 한 면을 담보한다.
임옥인은 5, 60년대 경직된 시대상황에서 사회적 자아의 추상성에 머물기보다 ‘지금 여기’ 생활 자체에 충실하여 작가의 시대적 사명에 값하려 하였다. 작가는 〈일상의 모험〉에서 행동을 통해 자기성찰과 탐구를 보여주었으며 그 길의 끝을 신앙의 길로 열어놓았다. 술을 진탕 마시고 할매와 가족을 괴롭히는 비정한 할배는 고양이 한 마리를 사랑하면서 자신의 내부에 감춰진 사랑을 발견하고 스스로 구원을 받게 되는데 사형수와의 만남과 교화, 이 할배의 회심이 소설의 핵이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Ok-In Lim is a writer who could clearly demonstrate the trajectory on pursuit of a 'true self' that defines the connection between an author's desire for authenticity and the novel forms, by representing the inflection of writing methods from classical novel techniques to an auto biographical writing forms.
Ilsanguimoheom(The Adventure of Everyday Life) by Lim is a novel about self-creation that unfolds the author's life stories in narrative form, and aims to share or reduce mental pains by opening her mind to others. Another novel of Lim's, the Narrating the Self, put attentions on things with less priority in this society and tries to seek for the truth by facing frustration, anguish, and even trouble of living. This could be considered as both the final outcome of restraining private life of the author and a strategy of narrating oneself. The logical theory is that such writing technique induces the life of a main character to seem creative and descriptive.
Furthermore, the novel form of Ok-In Lim's writings bring up abject related to critical human unconscious such as blood, excrement, skull, water from a corpse, leprosy, insanity, and depression for several times. These conceptions contain another perspective of Lim's authenticity, while they hold subverting aspects toward the contradiction over social orders and systems like patriarchy.
Lim had kept her faiths in the real life 'here and now' rather than within an abstractive social self of the rigid society back in 1950s and 1960s of Korea. The author narratively describes and looks into herself in 'Everyday Adventure' and expresses the experience of self-exploration while setting up an open end to reach out to religious part. When a cruel and stingy old man who always gets drunken and distresses his wife and family finds his potential of loving hidden inside of his mind through his attachment with a cat, he eventually attains salvation. This is the core subject of the story, which puts even higher relative importance than for the event of meeting a condemned criminal.
