진정성의 기원과 구조

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 80년대 이후 97년 IMF 외환위기에 이르기까지 한국 사회에서 특히 청년 세대를 중심으로 중요한 규범적 가치로 기능했던 진정성(authenticity)의 기원과 구조에 대한 사회학적 탐구를 시도한다. 이를 위해 우리는 기왕의 사회과학이 에토스(푸코), 집합표상(뒤르켐), 정신/윤리(베버), 습속(토크빌), 심성(아날학파), 마음의 습관(벨라) 등으로 개념화한 집합 규범의 체계를 ‘마음의 레짐’이라는 개념으로 재정립한다. 이처럼 마음의 레짐으로 이해된 진정성은 근대 자아정치학의 한 기획으로 특수한 주체성을 생산하는 ‘장치’로 기능하는데, 그 구조를 우리는 성찰적 자아, 내면, 공적 의미 지평의 세 요소들을 중심으로 설명한다. 진정성을 추구하는 주체는 내면과의 대화를 통해서 삶의 진정한 의미를 발견하고 이를 공적 의미 지평에서 실현시키고자 사회에 참여하는 존재이다. 그러나 진정성의 윤리가 요구하는 끝없는 자기성찰과 자기점검은 결국 진정성이 이상적으로 구현되는 삶의 형식을 요절에서 발견하게 하는 아이러니를 내포하고 있다. 환언하면, 진정성의 이상은 영광스런 죽음과 부끄러운 생존을 두 가지의 대조적인 삶의 형식으로 규정하고 전자를 승인함으로써 삶의 물적이고 세속적인 차원에 강한 도덕적 폭력을 행사한다. 우리는 이런 진정성의 레짐이 97년 IMF 외환위기 이후에 급속하게 쇠퇴하면서 새롭게 등장하는 생존주의라는 ‘마음의 레짐’에 자리를 내어주는 변동의 동학을 진단함으로써, 진정성 레짐의 역사적 운명을 평가한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article attempts to shed light on the origin and structure of authenticity which played the role of an important value system especially for young generations in Korean society through 1980s and until. 1997 when a financial crisis hit the country. For accomplish this task, this article introduces a new concept of the 'regime of the heart', which replaces a series of traditional concepts designating the system of collective norms like ethos(Foucault), collective representation (Durkheim), the spirit or ethics(Weber), folklore(Tocqueville), mentality(Annales), and the habit of the heart(Bellah). Conceptualized as a regime of the heart, the authenticity fulfills the role of apparatus that produces specific subjects, whose structure can be elucidated by its three important components: reflexive subjects, interiority and public horizon. The subject in search of authenticity tries to find the authentic meaning of his life by entering into communication with his inner self, while simultaneously trying to realize it in the public field through active social engagement. However, under the pressure of moral and ethical integrity, premature death is considered as the ideal form of life of authenticity. In other words, the ideal of authenticity leads one to separate glorious death from ignoble survival and to approve of the former, which translates into an act of strong moral violence against the material and secular dimensions of life. Finally we attempt to evaluate the historical destiny of the regime of authenticity by examining the process through which authenticity declines and gives way to the post-authentic regime in the wake of the 1997 financial meltdown.
