This paper aims to examine the interpretation of tautological utterances from the perspective of neo-Gricean pragmatics and relevance principle. Tautology has been traditionally treated as a true, but uninformative proposition in any contexts produced. Grice(1975), however, characterizes tautology implicatures as a special case of conversational implicature arising through a speaker's flouting of the maxim of Quantity. In their pragmatic analysis of Grice's approach, Ward & Hirschberg(1990) claim that tautological utterances of the form, "X is X" do not permit the alternative, "X is Y" in the context produced. They then propose speakers exploit the Gricean maxims of Quantity and Relation to convey tautology implicatures. However, their new account is not explicitly given enough to explicate whether the two Gricean maxims are always necessary for all forms of tautology implicatures. So, this paper presents Levinson(2000) GCI theory as the alternative on the basis of relevance. I-implicatures in contrast with Q-and M-implicatures introduced in his GCI theory which are generally explained by the inferences of metalinguistic mode and negative propositions, allow us to recognize that the role of the maxim of Quantity is quite limited in the interpretation of tautology implicatures.
