Background: It is important to diagnostic aproach for the elderly which is not only disease but also functional assessment. this study aimed to find a factor related closely activities of daily living (ADL) which means minimal function necessary to independence for social activity.
Method: This study was conducted using a questionaire survey, history taking and physical examination was done in 219 elderly patients over 65, who had visited either of 5 universities hospitals in the Kyoung-in and Chung-choung district from October 1999 to April 2003. A variety of factors being thought to be related to ADL was investigated by using the existing comprehensive geriatric assessment. this survey conducted the demographic and statistical characteristics, item related to health behavior, mini-nutritional assessment, geriatric depression scale, MMSE-K(Mini-Mental State Examination, Korean version)and social network scale etc. We selected the chi-square analysis, logistic regression analysis as the method of analysis.
Result: The subjects consisted of 80 men and 139 women. According to the result of multi-variable quantities analysis, it was shown that the basic ADL had relation to age, nutritional assessment, spouse, cognitive function and social isolation and shown that the instrunmental ADL had relation to age, nutritional assessment and cognitive function. (P<0.05)
Conclusion: The factors having a close relation to BADL of the elderly were age, nutritional assessment, spouse, cognitive function and social isolation, and the factors to IADL of the elderly were age, nutritional assessment and cognitive function.
