자녀교육의 여성화에 관한 연구: 어머니의 역할과 경험을 중심으로 = A Study on the Feminization of Children's Education: Focused on Mother's Roles and Experiences in their Children's Education

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 어머니가 자녀교육을 위해 주도적인 역할을 담당하는 이른바 자녀교육의 여성화(feminization of children's education) 현상을 분석하는 것이다. 특히, 어머니들이 자녀교육을 어떻게 자신의 일로 내면화하는지를 알아보고, 이 과정에서 어머니들이 교육수준과 계급에 따라 자녀교육 지원활동에서 무엇을 경험하는가를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 문헌분석과 면접법을 사용하였다. 분석결과 어머니들이 자녀교육을 자신의 일로 내면화한 것은 가족주의 이데올로기와 성별 분업 이데올로기, 자연스러운 모성 본능, 합리적 선택, 그리고 여성의 구성적 권력화의 영향 때문이었다. 이러한 것들은 상호배타적이 아니라 어머니의 사회적 조건에 따라 중첩적으로 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 어머니들은 자녀교육을 지원하는 과정에서 교육과 계급의 숨겨진 상처에 따라 영향을 받고 있었으며, 자녀교육 활동이 지속적으로 확장되고 다양화되는 것으로 나타났다. 어머니들은 스스로 좋은 어머니와 는 거리가 있다는 불안감을 가지고 있었으며, 그로 인해 책임감과 죄책감을 경험하는 것으로 나타났다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article explores the social meaning and characteristics of the feminization of children's education. In particular, it focuses on the mother's descriptions of why they internalize children's education as their work, and what they experience in educational support activities for their children. In order to examine these problems, this article draws on interviews with twelve mothers. The results are below. First, the feminization of children's education is explained by four different reasons: patriarchy-gendered ideology, mothering ideology, adaptive preference theory, and domestic constructive empowerment of the mother. These reasons are not mutually exclusive but are very inter-related. Second, many mothers have very different experiences in practices of educational support activities for their children. Their experiences are affected by the social conditions of mothers and practices of mothering can be understood as the social construction. The mother's role and experiences in their children's education are more intense and diverse. Also, many mothers have not only strong responsibilities but also guilt feelings, and they do not think themselves as a ‘good mother’ because of their educational and economic inabilities. Last, this article suggests that we need to study the roles and types of father's involvement in their children's education.
