Most analyses of the wage determinants in Korea use the “Establishment Survey” data in regression analysis, taking hourly rate of wage as the dependant variable. This paper uses the data provided by the “Survey on Working Conditions in Establishments” and the “Economically Active Population Survey” in OLS regression analysis and quantile regression analysis, taking hourly rate of wage and monthly average wage as the dependant variables. Findings of the empirical analysis can be summarized as in the following:
First, gender-based wage difference is found to be conspicuously significant, even when all other variables are controlled. Contrary to the expectation that gender-based wage differences would not be significant for the higher quantiles, in view of the social advances made by women with higher education, there was 20% gender-linked divergence even in the middle and higher quantiles. Marital status and the type of relation to the “head of household” also exercised significant influence on wage determination. The wage system in Korea is rooted in the male breadwinner family model, where males perceived as head of household and breadwinner, while women are noted as spouse and dependant.
Second, it was found that return on education is higher than return on tenure and the return on age. Rate of return on education is higher for higher quantiles, while return on tenure declines with higher quantiles. The intensity of “education drive” characteristic of the Korean society could be said to reflect this empirically corroborated higher rate of return on education.
Third, the wage divergence between the workers in “regular” employment and the workers in “irregular” employment became wider in lower quantiles, indicating that policy measures on irregular employment need to focus on lower-wage groups.
Fourth, union wage-premium is found to apply to both members and non-members of trade unions, while the union members benefit more than non-members. However, there was no statistically significant difference for union wage-premium in all wage classes other than the lowest decile.
