미국 대학입학제도의 전형자료, 입학사정관제도 및 기여입학제도 분석 - 개별적 검토를 중심으로 = U.S. system of college admission : Focusing on individualized review

국문 초록 (Abstract)

  이 연구는 미국의 대학입학제도를 분석하여 우리나라의 대입제도 개선에 대한 시사점을 제공하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 미국의 대입제도를 역사적 맥락에서 분석한 결과, 현재의 미국 대입제도의 특징을 관통하는 원리로 특정 계층의 학생을 선발하거나 배제할 수 있는 방법인 ‘개별적 검토’가 도출되었다. 이 원리를 중심으로 미국 대입제도의 실태와 관련된 주요전형자료의 성격과 입학관리 시스템의 대표적인 특징이라 할 수 있는 입학사정관제도, 기여입학제의 사례, 주립대학의 입학제도를 분석하였다. 국내 대학입시개혁과 관련된 여러 논의 가운데 입학사정관 제도의 도입이나 지역을 고려한 입학정책, 고등학교의 수준을 고려한 입학결정 등과 같은 사항들은 결국 개별적 검토를 우리나라에서도 적용할 수 있는가 하는 문제를 논의하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

  The purpose of this study is to provide suggestions for college admission procedures in Korea by analyzing U.S. system of college admission. History of U.S. college admission policy shows that the cornerstones of U.S. college admission were ‘discretion’ and ‘opacity’- discretion so that college administrators would be free to select or to screen out students deemed socially undesirable and opacity so that how they used their discretion would not be subject to public scrutiny. These features could be possible through ‘comprehensive or individualized review’ on college admission applicants.<BR>  Selection criteria that U.S. college remaining the same under comprehensive review are high school grade point average, standardized test scores, performance in honors and AP courses, class rank, high school qualities, etc. Admission readers and committee members as admission officers make decision about which students will be accepted, based on the consideration a variety of factors. The ‘subjective evaluation’ could be linked to the preferences of privilege-legacy, development cases, athletic preference, and celebrity.<BR>  The policy recommendations of U.S. college admission analysis are closely related to the extent of accepting the individualized review approach in the situation, highly selective and competitive college admission in Korea.
