수학능력 시험 실시 10년간 대학의 서열 변화 = Changes in the Hierarchy among Korean Universities form 1994 to 2003

국문 초록 (Abstract)

  본고는 1994년부터 2003년까지 대학별 학과별 평균 수능점수 자료를 활용하여 수학능력 시험 실시 이후 10년 동안 수능점수로 파악된 대학의 서열이 어떻게 변해 왔는가를 고찰하고 대학의 행태와 서열변화의 관계를 살펴본다. 지난 10년 동안 대학 서열의 변화는 주로 서열 상 중위권 이하의 학교들 사이에서 주로 이루어져 왔으며 상위 30% 이상에서는 거의 서열의 변동이 없는 것으로 파악된다. 또한 서열의 변화는 1998년 이전이 그 이후보다 활발했음이 나타나 최근 들어 고착화가 다소 심화되는 경향을 보이는 한편 2000년 이후 전공에 따른 서열화가 새로운 현상으로 나타나고 있다. 대학의 행태와 서열의 변화의 관계를 살펴보면 서열이 대학의 재정적 측면의 노력보다는 학교의 위치와 규모 등의 요인에 크게 좌우되는 것으로 나타나지만 1인당 교육비의 증가나 우수 교수진의 확보 혹은 교수들의 연구 성과는 서열에 변화를 가져올 잠재력을 크게 가지고 있음이 발견된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

  This paper analyzes the hierarchical structure of Korean universities for ten years since an SAT-type national entrance examination has been implemented in 1994. Utilizing a data set of the average test score of entering students from 1994 to 2003 at the university level, we try to find out whether there has been any meaningful changes in the hierarchical structure and the competition among universities has any effect on the hierarchical structure. We can summarize our main findings as follows; (1) There have been few changes in hierarchical structure among the top 30 percent universities. (2) Meanwhile, the "stickiness" of hierarchy has been somewhat stronger after the year 2000 than before. (3) The current state of hierarchical structure has mainly shaped by such exogenous factors as the size and location of the school. (4) Financial efforts, especially, an increase in expenditure per student have some effects on changes in hierarchical structure. (5) Research performances of faculty members are positively correlated with the upward movements toward a higher hierarchy.
