This study examined the effects of trainers' communication styles on trainees' sense of selfdetermination which has been researched as a core construct in the studies of job redesign, intrinsic motivation, and empowerment. Trainers' communication styles are hypothesized to be important contextual variables in the cognitive evaluation process of the external events, where the trainees' sense of self-determination is built from. On the site for training military helicopter pilots, effects of two salient communication styles in performance-oriented organizations, supportive style and controling style, on the sense of self-determination were examined, and the interaction effects of the student pilots' locus of control with the communication styles were also examined. Results from the longitudinal data of 187 students pilots in two consecutive training stages, showed that supportive style has significant positive effects on self-determination, while negative effects of the controling style on self-determination were not significant. The interaction effects of locus of control with communication style were found partially only in the sample of warrant officer candidates. The effects of instructors' communication style on self-determination of student pilots seemed to be very strong, in that they were repeatedly found in each of two training stages, and also found after partialling out the pre-score effects of the self-determination at the early stage. With the related research findings, the finding that student pilots' sense of self-determination was actually increased as the training progressed in this study suggests the interesting hypothesis relating to changing effects of trainers' communication styles on trainees' self-determination as the time progressed.
