머튼의 아노미 이론에 대한 비판적 고찰 : 긴장이론적 해석과 구조-문화 불일치 명제를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 머튼이 자신의 아노미 이론에 대한 최근의 불만족스러운 결산을 내렸다는 점에 주목하면서, 머튼의 아노미 이론의 핵심진술로 간주되는 긴장이론적 진술과 ‘구조-문화 불일치 가설’에 대해 비판적 검토를 수행한다. 이론적 검토는 미시 이론으로서 긴장이론적 진술은 머튼 텍스트에서 도출한 것으로 보기 어려우며, 머튼의 최근 결론에서도 알 수 있는 것처럼 유용한 것으로 인정받지 못했다는 점을 발견하였다. 결과적으로 머튼의 이론은 발표 시점과 마찬가지로 미시 이론적 토대가 없는 거시이론으로서만 존재하고 있다. 다음 단계에서 머튼의 아노미 이론의 핵심진술인 ‘구조-문화 불일치 명제’를 뒤르케임의 아노미 이론의 ‘목표-수단 괴리’의 명제와 직접 비교하며, 그 결과 머튼의 명제가 뒤르케임의 명제보다 통찰력이 약하다는 결론에 이르게 된다. 이상의 분석을 종합하였을 때, 아노미 이론을 발전시킬 잠재력은 뒤르케임의 아노미 사상에 충실한 옵(Opp) 버전의 아노미 이론에서 있다고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Starting from the general critique of the Merton's anomie theory articulated by himself in 1997, this paper conducts critical examinations against the strain-theoretical statement and 'structure-culture discrepancy' thesis both regarded as the core statements by Merton. The strain-theoretical statement as micro theoretical is not to be viewed as derived from the Merton's original text, and, as can be judged by Merton's own conclusion, has been proved as unuseful. Consequently, Merton's theory remains as micro-theory without micro theoretical foundation despite studies during the last 60 years. At the next stage, this paper directly compares the 'structure-culture discrepancy thesis, that is the core statement of Merton's anomie theory, to the goal-means discrepancy thesis in the Durkheimian term. It is concluded that the thesis by Merton is weaker in explaining anomie than that by Durkheim. Based on the summary of these analyses, the potential to develop the anomie theory further can be found in the anomie theory in the Opp's version which is sound on the anomie concepts and theory by Durkheim.
