코스모폴리탄 사회학 = 세계화 시대의 사회학적 대응

국문 초록 (Abstract)

경제적, 정치적 세계화와는 달리 가치의 문제와 직결된 문화적 세계화는 세계화론의 가장 민감하고 논쟁적인 역역에 속한다. 최근 여러 문화연구가들은 현대적 삶이 차별화된 담론과 실천을 지향한다고 주장하면서, 지역적인 것, 구체적인 것, 특수한 것, 이질적인 것, 그리고 일상생활의 미시적 단면에 초점을 맞춘 세계화론의 새로운 전환을 모색하는데, 울리히 벡은 이러한 새로운 시도를 코스모폴리타니즘 사회학으로 규정한다. 코스모폴리타니즘은 도덕적, 사회적, 문화적 유형으로 대별할 수 있는데, 그 중 가장 주시해야 할 것이 문화적 코스모폴리타니즘이다. 문화적 코스모폴리타니즘에 관한 국내 연구는 국제결혼이나 외국인 근로자 문제를 대상으로 한 대상중심적 연구가 주류였으나, 그것을 “코스모폴리탄 상상력”(cosmopolitan imagination)이 병합된 패러다임 수준으로 격상시키는 것이 바람직하다고 본다. 타자성 극복을 통한 내집단-외집단 간의 소통을 강조하는 코스모폴리탄 상상력은 정감적 결속력에 기초한 새로운 사회적 연대를 통해 이성적 힘과 감성적 힘을 동시적으로 활용한 대안적 사회질서의 형성을 향도할 수 있으므로, 코스모폴리탄 패러다임으로부터는 이성중심적 사회학(logo-centric sociology)을 넘어 과학주의와 인문주의가 회통하는 “새로운 사회학”(sociology2.0)을 기획할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

During the process of globalization, cosmopolitanism emerges as a promising source of social cohesion among the members of a society having different ethnic or cultural background. According to Ulrich Beck, cosmopolitanism means rooted globalism, "globalization within" where the distinctions between local-national, national-national or local-global are all imploded.
Although cosmopolitanism can take many forms, it is possible to classify them into three conceptual forms; moral cosmopolitanism, social cosmopolitanism and cultural cosmopolitanism. Among those, cultural cosmopolitanism is taken to be most important since culture is known as a wonderful machine that can make differences.
Under the condition of cultural cosmopolitanism, cosmopolitan movement can enhance its integrative power that enables us to combine different forces - high and low, right and left, center and periphery, local and global and the like. The result will be more than the coexistence of difference. Instead of simple coexistence, the co-evolution of the society and culture giving rise to a society of high maturity is expected.
Taking current dynamics of "the social," into account, it seems necessary to incorporate the idea of cosmopolitanism, particularly that of cultural cosmopolitanism in sociological theorizing and develop cosmopolitan paradigm, that goes far above either an object of sociological investigation or a part of intellectual resources.
