The subject of fusions between traditional music and western music was prominent under Japan's colonial rule 1910-1945, among which the acutest controversies were in Korean traditional folk songs. The music critics such as Kim guan, An giyeong, Gu wangsham, etc. recognized that Korean traditional music including folk songs were old-fashioned, so the new fusions with western music were necessary for new Korean contemporary music. Accordingly the harmony of pentatonic scale or an accompaniment by western musical instruments was mainly argued.
These controversies were very important in modern point in that they are not cleared till now. However, these controversies proceeded from the overbalance of western music compared with Korean traditional music, so they were the aspects of Korean traditional music under the hegemony of western music.
