다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

Research on immigrants usually focus on the assimilation phenonenon. However, differences exist in the case of the second generation, which we can call biculturalism. It is important for the second generation to adapt to the host society but the cultural identity of the immigrant country should also be taken into account. This study aims to examine the relationship between media use - both ethnic and mainstream - and the cultural identities of second generation adolescents. A survey in US cities was administered to second generation Korean-Americans in July~October 2007. Cluster analysis identifies three distinct groups according to the acculturation level; integration, assimilation and segmentation. Korean media use, timing of immigration, proportion of Korean-American friends were significant factors that influenced the identity as Koreans. The higher the level of Korean media use, the number of Korean friends, the earlier in life they immigrated second generation Korean-Americans tend to be in the integrated group.
This study looks at how second generation Korean-Americans use their ethnic media and how that affects their bicultural identities. Since media is consumed within the family and peer group environment, the context of media consumption was also taken into account.
