부르디외, 콜만, 퍼트남의 사회적 자본 개념 비판

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사회과학의 전문개념으로서 사회학, 정치학, 행정학, 경제학, 경영학 분야의 전문학자들뿐 아니라 정부 각 부문 정책 담당자들 및 금융과 경제계의 분석가들에 의해서 널리 사용되고 있는 개념은 흔치 않다. 사회적 자본이 그러하다. 그러나 그 결과 이 개념을 둘러싼 혼란도 아울러 증폭되고 있다. 세계은행과 워싱턴 컨센서스의 시각에서는 사회적 자본을 정치와 경제발전을 동시에 가져다주는 만능약으로 보지만, 그와 정반대로 이를 정실과 부패의 핵심 고리로 보는 시각도 존재한다. 이 개념이 금융적 투자와 사회적 관계를 혼동시키고 있다는 비판도 있고, 개인간 사회관계와 집단적 사회관계를 뒤섞고 있다는 비판도 제기된다. 이 개념의 이론적 엄밀성에 대한 회의와 비판, 그리고 이 개념의 정치적 이데올로기적 함의에 대한 의혹과 비판이 동시에 확산되고 있다.
이 글은 이러한 여러 가지 혼란의 원인을 그 이론적 원천, 즉 이 개념을 확립한 피에르 부르디외, 제임스 콜만과 이를 대중적으로 확산시킨 로버트 퍼트남의 사회적 자본 개념의 내적 한계에서 찾는다. 부르디외와 콜만의 사회적 자본 개념은 이 글이 ‘자기이해의 단일동기론’이라 부르는 이론적 전제에 기반한다. 이 이론적 전제는 사회적 관계 맺음의 동기를 협소하게 일원화함으로써 비영리적, 공공적, 탈물질적 사회관계를 적절하게 설명할 수 없게 한다. 퍼트남은 이 개념의 적용범위를 시민적 정치문화로 확대시킴으로써 이 한계의 극복을 시도했지만, 이 개념의 내용은 콜만과 부르디외의 그것을 그대로 도입함으로써, 개념의 내용이 그 적용대상을 일관되게 설명할 수 없게 되었다. 퍼트남은 이러한 한계를 사회적 자본의 개념 내부에 근 일천년 전으로 소급되는 ‘시민적 전통’을 도입함으로써 해결해보려 하였지만, 퍼트남의 ‘전통’이란 탈맥락 적인 박제품일 뿐 아니라, 행위동기의 환원론에 역사적 환원론을 추가한 것에 불과하다. 그 결과 퍼트남의 사회적 자본 개념에는 결코 서로 화합될 수 없는 두 개의 환원론적 오류가 병립하게 되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The concept of social capital, coined by Pierre Bourdieu and James Coleman, and popularized by Robert Putnam, is being widely circulated. The scope of circulation includes not only academicians, it also extends to governmental policy makers, economic and financial analysts, and even to influential journalists. However, as much as the uses of the concept enlarge, confusions and suspicions about it also grow. The lack of precise meaning, very loose and confusing applications of the concept as well as its conservative political, ideological implications have been pointed out by many critical reviewers.
This essay argues that above mentioned problems are originated from the theoretical problems of Bourdieu’s, Coleman’s and Putnam’s concept of social capital, which are, the fallacies of reductionism. This essay finds the motivational reductionism of self-interest as the theoretical presupposition of both Bourdieu’s and Coleman’s social capital. This reductionist presupposition blinds the varieties of social relations while positioning every social relationships within the reach of social capital. Bourdieu’s and Coleman’s social capital especially have weaknesses in explaining non-profit-seeking, public caused, and post-materialist modes of social relations. Putnam, on the other hand, has attempted to extend the applicability of the concept to civic culture, while relying on Bourdieu’s and Coleman’s motivational reductionism of self-interest. This is proved as an impossible mission. The proof is Putnam’s backdoor import of the idea of the (North-Italian) civic tradition tracing back to the past of one thousand years ago. Putnam’s ‘civic tradition’ plays the similar role to ‘self-interest’ in Bourdieu’s and Coleman’s theories. Putnam’s tracing back to the past reproduces Bourdieu’s and Coleman’s reductionism in other way, which is, historical reductionism. Putnam doubles Bourdieu’s and Coleman’s fallacies of reductionism.
