    The rapid development of new technologies has changed the themes and subject matter in the field of Korean communication studies, as Internet and mobile communications produced new social and cultural phenomena. This is reflected in the citing-life of articles; the median age of references in this discipline is 7.6 years, similar to that of the natural sciences. When analyzed the citation network during 1996 to 2005 in Journalism and Communication Studies, we found that the citation network had a structure of small world. Over eighteen thousand citing and cited references are linked, on average, in 8 steps and the distribution of degrees fits a power law. Internet and mobile communication-related materials were located at the center of the network being able to reach other subjects in shorter steps. Keyword network analysis also showed a similar small world structure.
    We also analyzed who cites whom to see if citation is socially constructed. The result shows that the relations of alumni (BA, Ph. D) enhance the probability of citing, controlling characteristics of references such as their age, subject etc.
