공공 화법과 토론 교육이 의사소통 능력, 토론 효능감, 시민성에 미치는 효과

Can learning the principles and skills of public speaking and debate enhance the learners' communication competence, debate efficacy and civility? Employing a field experiment design, this study examines the effects of taking a semester course of 'public speaking and debate' on learners' self reported communication competence, debate efficacy and civility. Pre and post-test surveys were conducted on 79 college students enrolled in the courses of 'public speaking and debate' as well as on a comparison group of students. Positive experimental effects were found for those who enrolled in public speaking and debate in terms of the communication competence dimensions of 'control' and 'appropriateness' and of the collective efficacy. Public trust and willingness to participate in public discussion were also enhanced in the experimental condition.
