Most studies on the impacts of new media on the traditional media have been based mainly on the media substitution hypothesis. These studies, depending on the concept of functional alternative, draw no firm conclusion about the media substitution hypothesis, and seem to reveal some theoretical and methodological limitations. Alternatively, this study proposes a time reallocation hypothesis, arguing that new media such as Internet reallocates time resources already allocated to media uses and other activities, which results in total reorganization of the time-use pattern. Analyses of data derived from The 1999 Time Use Survey of National Statistical Office show that the Internet use has more influence upon other activities than media uses. Findings strongly suggest that the time reallocation hypothesis is theoretically valid. Especially the findings of this study that Internet use has strong relationship with activities such as sleeping, work or leisure give an opportunity to discuss new communication technologies including the Internet in the macro-sociological perspective.
