Gratification sought (GS), gratification obtained (GO) and not obtained (GNO) by Internet users were analyzed in relation to their using behavior (time consumed and types of behavior). As a result of a pretest (in = 85) and a main survey (n = 511), contact, information, convenience, and chance expectation and satisfaction were found to be key components in Internet usage. Moreover, need for contact were proved to be more important than need for information in using Internet, which implies a possible shift of emphasis from informative use to socio-emotional use of Internet. It was also suggested that GO and GNO are not always symmetrical, because unexpected dissatisfaction was generated by Internet users after use. This implies a unique characteristic of Internet media differentiated from old media in that Internet can prompt a new expectation followed by continued use even after the users experience some unexpected dissatisfaction.
