이동전화를 통한 어머니 노릇(mothering)의 재생산

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The contemporary family life goes through rapid changes these days. Among those changes, family members do not find enough time to stay at home to enjoy their domesticity. Teenager children spend more time outside home than inside due to heavy emphasis on their education. The invention of mobile phone enables remote mothering, providing the communication channel between mothers and their staying-out children. Through in-depth interviews with mothers, the researcher found out that mobile phones were used to perform the instrumental mothering, i.e. tending daily necessities of children such as providing food and giving rides as well as expressive mothering which took care of emotional aspects of children. Although the mothers felt that mobile phones were helpful to carry out their motherly tasks, they also felt that they were isolated from their growing-up children when they used mobile phones exclusively with their peers. They confessed that they tended to attach too much to their children since they could reach their children at any time. The mothers' slower adaptation to the new mobile technology indicated that there might be some power subversion between the mothers and their children. To sum, the use of mobile phone reinforces and reproduces the existing mothering practice rather than alleviates the oppressive nature of mothering.
