The ideological confrontation between the conservative forces and the progressive forces has been recognized as serious social conflict in Korean society since the early 90's. It has manifested itself in the Korean press and been deployed as discursive struggle to acquire hegemonic meanings, especially between the conservative press, Chosun- Ilbo, and the progressive press, Hankurae-Sinmun, In this perspective, this paper analyzes how the Korean press defines ideological terms such as the conservative and the progressive; the right and the left; and liberalism and socialism in a social context and the theoretical background of articulation theory in the tradition of cultural studies. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the relationship between the way the Korean press define ideological terms and the resulting social effects.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows: Firstly, the discursive formation around the conservative, manifested by the Cho-sun Ilbo, as a dominant ideology in Korean society, is articulated by traditional anti-communism. Its effects are apparent as firmness of people's thought, the psychology of military mobilization, and belief of monoism. Secondly, the progressive discursive formation is articulated by the meanings of nation, reconciliation, and cooperation. It has, accordingly, demanded the abolishment of the national security law and the strengthening of the fair competition system against the conservative ideology, which is a dominant ideology in Korean society.
Based on these findings, this paper suggests that Korean press plays an important role in the public sphere in settling the values and institutions that establish liberal democracy. The focus of which should be articulated by the values of nation, reconciliation and cooperation.
