고유섭과 한국회화사 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 又玄 고유섭의 繪畵史 硏究 중 朝鮮時代에 초점을 두고자 한다. 그 이유는 三國, 統一新羅, 高麗시대의 연구까지를 포함하면 광범위하기도 하지만, 유달리 그의 조선시대 회화사에 관한 연구업적이 제대로 빛을 보지 못했기 때문이다. 흥미로운 사실은 又玄의 朝鮮時代 繪畵에 대한 논문들은 後學들이 거의 거들떠보지도 않았을 뿐더러, 보다 그의 학문 전체의 시대적 限界, 즉 植民地時代의 史觀에 대한 비판에 일관해 온 듯한 인상을 준다.
又玄의 朝解時代 繪畵史 연구는 화가별 연구, 화론의 집성에서 시작되었던 것으로 보인다. 그가 발표한 安堅, 姜希顔, 鄭善, 金弘道에 관한 논문들은 이미 現代 韓國繪畵史의 기틀을 마련하고 있고, 또 그 안에서 中國ㆍ日本 繪畵와 맺은 관계는 물론이고 나아가 그들 회화에 나타난 朝鮮時代의 美意識과 表現樣式의 성립과 변화, 영향 관계를 탐구하고 있다. 死後 그 자신의 표현대로 ‘未終章’으로 끝난 韓國繪畵史 연구는 황수영, 진홍섭, 최순우, 이동주 선생 제위에 의해 계승되어, 다음 세대에 와서 안휘준 선생에 의해 일차 완성을 보았으나 그의 양식분석과 작품과 문헌사료의 검증에 기초한 철저한 과학적인 연구태도는 미의식을 포함한 다각적인 측면을 배제한 것이었다. 이제 홍선표 선생 등 차세대 학자들에 의해 또 하나의 轉機를 맞고 있으며 이들은 보다 다각적인 연구를 지향하고 있다. 이들을 통해 고유섭 유산의 중요성이 재인식되고 한국회화사에서 이룩한 그의 학문적 성취가 인정받기를 바란다.
이 논문은 고유섭의 미술사 史觀, 고유섭의 회화사 연구방법과 연구범위, 고유섭의 朝鮮時代 繪畵史 硏究論文 고찰, 고유섭의 繪畵觀, 고유섭의 東洋畵論으로 구성되어 있다.
끝으로 고유섭의 사고와 학문적 범위를 알기 위해 〈부록 1〉에는 종류별로 그의 전 출판물을 정리해 보았고, 또〈부록 2〉에서는 그의 연구와 집필기간 동안인 1908-1944년 기간에 한, 일, 독, 불에서 출판되었던 한국 서예와 회화사 관련 책과 논문, 수필들을 총 열거해 놓음으로써 후학들이 그의 학문적 사승관계와 영향의 성격, 그리고 학문적 독창성을 탐구할 수 있는 자료를 제공하고자 하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study is focused on the scholarship of Go Yuseop on the Joseon -dynasty painting, one of his scholarly accomplishments which has not been given due attention. It is an intriguing phenomenon that his studies on the subject have been often ignored by later scholars in the midst of criticism of his overall art historical view as based on colonial mentality and limitation.
Go Yuseop's research on the history of Joseon painting appears to have started with individual painters and painting theory. His essays on An Gyeon, Gang Heuian, Jeong Seon, and Gim Hongdo established a firm methodological foundation for later art historians of Korean painting. In these essays he not only explores the relationship with Chinese and Japanese painting, but also the period's sense of beauty and stylistic formation and evolution. After his untimely death, his research work, left "unfinished" in his own words, was succeeded by Hwang Suyeong. Jin Hongseop, Choe Sunu, and Yi Dongju. With a life-long effort of An Hwijun, a complete history of Korean painting has become available. Throughout his career, he set his goal to pursue scientific data and stylistic analysis, intently devoid of aesthetic and political, socioeconomic discussions. Now a group of next-generation art historians including Hong Seonpyo is at work for the advancement of field in a more comprehensive approach. It is a hope of this writer that they recognize the significance of the Go Yuseop legacy and give due credit to his scholarship on the history of painting.
The main part of this study presents, in order, Go Yuseop's view of art history, his methodology for the study of painting history, analysis of his essays on individual painters, his thoughts on painting, followed by his theory of Asian painting.
Added are Appendix 1, Go Yuseop's published research by category and Appendix 2, List of books and articles on Korean painting and calligraphy published in Korea, Japan, Germany, and France from 1908 to 1944, the year of Go Yuseop's death.
