국문 초록 (Abstract)

1950년대에 한국의 무술은 여러 형태를 띠고 있었는데, 일부 지도자들이 태권도라는 이름으로 통합하는 과정을 시도하였다. 그들은 기술을 개발하고 국제화에 노력하였으며 1973년에는 세계태권도연맹을 창설하고 세계대회를 개최하였다.
세계태권도연맹은 1980년에 IOC 인정을 받았으며 1981년에는 태권도가 안정종목이 되었다. 이후, 1988년과 1992년에는 올림픽 시범종목으로 경기가 치러졌고 마침내 2000년 제26회 시드니 올림픽에서는 정식종목으로 채택되었다. 또한, 2004년 아테네 올림픽에서 정식종목으로 치러졌으며 2008년 베이징 올림픽에서도 정식종목으로 채택되었다. 현재 태권도의 올림픽경기는 세계선수권대회의 절반인 남녀 각각 4체급에서 경기가 치러지고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the middle 20th century, various Korean forms of martial arts have existed and a group of Korean martial arts leaders tried to unify the forms of Taekwondo. They attempt to develop its skills and advertize internationally. In 1973, the Korean government recognised the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) as the legitimate governing body of the sport, and the first World Championships were held.
In 1980, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) granted official recognition of the WTF and the IOC granted approval for Taekwondo to become part of the Olympic Games in 1981. After that, Taekwondo was an Olympic demonstration sport in 1988 and 1992. Finally, in the year 2000, Taekwondo was an official Olympic competition sport during the 26th Olympic Games held in Sydney Australia.
It continued to be an official Olympic competition sport in 2004 during the 28th Olympic Games held in Athens, Greece. Also, it is confirmed the inclusion of Taekwondo in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The Olympic competition format includes four weight classes each for men and women, half the number used in World Championships.
