This treatise examines the political history during King Seongdeog of Silla Dynasty. Its examination centers on the succession of King Seongdeog, the strengthening power of King Seongdeog, the aristocratic power during King Seongdeog, and the naming Prince Syungkyung as the Heir Apparent to the Throne. The following is the summary.
During his later years in reign, King Hyoso lost his political leadership due to Kyungyoung's Rebellion and Queen mother Shinmok's death. When King Hyoso died after eleven-year reign, Prince Hyomyung, i. e. King Seongdeog, who was a half brother to King Hyoso and seeking refuge in Mt. Odae, was helped to the throne by alienated aristocracy(aristocrats from Moryangbu), K yungyoung and Soonwon. Thus now the royal authority was influenced by aristocratic power.
In the first place to stabilize the chaotic political situation, King Seongdeog tried to restore bureaucratic support by new policies which promoted office and titles; and popular support by reducing and exempting taxation. He also tried to stabilize royal authority by tiding over his disqualified succession to the throne with building Whangboksa Tower(the Wishing Temple of Saryun Sect) and at the same time, by establishing positive diplomatic relationship with Tang Dynasty. King Seongdeog stabilized his royal authority by tactfully competing aristocratic sects which had helped him to be king.
However, after Kim Wontae, father of Queen Umjeong, was defeated by Kim Soonwon in their power struggle, the political leadership was passed into Kim Soonwon, and Queen Umjeong was deposed from the Palace and Kim Soonwon's daughter became Queen Sodeog. At this time at Prince Joongkyung's death, King Seongdeog named Seungkyung, born of Queen Umjeongj as the Heir Apparent. Here in order to check Kim Soonwon's power, King Seongdeog contrived the union of the Parks, who had been neglected from the Middle Period, and Kim Yooshin Family who had been neglected in early ages of King Seongdeog, and lower aristocrats, one of whom was Kim Shinchoong. On these bases, Seungkyung could succeed to the throne, but this probably could be a heavy burden on the politics during the King Hyoseong's reign.
