The outlook on another world has appeared and developed diversely in human history. Another world was created by human beings in order to overcome or deny the fact of life, so it involved the world of gods, the world of ideal, the world of the dead, and the world of eternal life. Consequently, the outlook on these worlds happened to be confused or repeated with each other in many ancient cultures.
The outlook on another world in ancient Korea varied passing through some phases. The concept on the soul of the dead and another world was not concrete at the phase of immature social hierarchy. However, social complexity and specialization led the thought on the fate of humankind and the world after death to be complicated. Additionally, another world was set up in different forms according to social role or status. For example, only the highest class like king and the nobility was thought to be able to go to the heaven, the supreme another world. The outlook on another world changed again greatly in the process of reorganizing social order as a result of expansion of productivity after 4th century. Increasing self-consciousness about human individualization and grope for new social relationship helped universal outlook on another world which emphasized individual's autonomous will and practice show up. Buddhism and Taoism also influenced on this situation.
