은유 이해 능력의 습득과 발달 양상 = Aspects on the Acquisition and Development of Metaphoric Comprehension Ability

The purpose of this study is to investigate the developmental changes in young children's metaphor comprehension and metaphor types with the function of age, attempting to explore the relationship between increased metaphor comprehension and language competence. The subjects in this study were 180 children, with 41 3-, 42 4-, 40 5, 40 6-year-olds subjects in each group, respectively. The metaphor comprehension measurement was used to measure children's comprehension using metaphor tasks which include concrete metaphors involving perceptual and functional similarity as well as abstract metaphors involving abstract conceptual and emotional domains. Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and Language Competence Test are assessed by the unexpected location change and unexpected content change tasks. The analysis showed a significant effect of age in metaphor comprehension by revealing that 3-year-olds were poor in all the metaphor tasks(perceptual similarity, functional similarity, abstract conception, emotional expression task), leading to lower performance outcomes. Among given tasks, the young children scored highest in perceptual similarity, followed by functional similarity. Also, abstract metaphors were found to be more difficult task than concrete ones and the performance improved significantly with age. Finally, the understanding of metaphors was closely tied to understanding of vocabulary meaning, with increases in language competence leading to better comprehension of metaphors.
