담화유형별 선호 논항 구조 = Discourse Genres and Preferred Argument Structures

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Contending that grammar is not enough to explain cognitive frames and processes of interlocutors of a discourse, and that analyses of spoken discourses reveal more of those characteristics than written discourses, Du Bois(2001) claims that there is a particular pattern lying at the intersection of spoken discourse and grammar: Preferred Argument Structure (PAS). This paper examines whether PAS constraints can be applied to any types of discourses. Four different genres of discourses in English including drama scripts, letters, essays, and newspaper articles are analyzed to find out what kinds of differences there exist, if any, between these different types of discourses. The statistical analysis reveals that Du Bois' PAS constraints are generally obeyed even in written discourse, but that the more typical of written discourse a discourse text is, the higher the ratio of lexical arguments in the subject position of transitive verbs is. It also shows that newspaper articles, which are regarded as most typical examples of written discourse, may not observe the PAS constraints.
