Choe Jeong-Soon. 2006. 06. 30. Curriculum Development and Assessment in Korean for Academic Purposes. Bilingual Research 31. 277-313. The last decade has seen enormous growth of teaching Korean as a foreign language, and this was accompanied with the establishment of the discipline of “Korean as a foreign language.” Nevertheless, some fundamental aspects seem to have yet been neglected, resulting possibly from the fact that the distribution of the researchers has been regionally biased and most researches have been carried out in Seoul. Teaching Korean for academic purpose might be one of these forgotten aspects. The aim of this paper is to fill this gap and to investigate questions about the curriculum development for AP courses. It deals with questions of developing proficiency scales, course design, and assessment. As a part of the article, it also presents the new AP curriculum and the “Assessment for Study Competence in Korean” as are now introduced at Paichai University to meet both the interest of the students and the demands of the teaching staff.
