In recent days, the paradigm in reading education has shifted from cognition-based approach to context-based approach. This broadened our understanding of reading to readers` active construction of meaning in socio-cultural context, not to readers` passive psychological process. However, since the external text context appeared based on the internal text context, we should focus on discourse conventions or rules in the text to understand the readers` construction of meaning appropriately. This article revealed the types of non-literary texts such as informative or persuasive text to provide a basis for encouraging context-based reading. These text types was established by describing and analyzing features, based on considering communicative functions and text structures. This will help students do perform context-based reading of non-literary texts and can also be used as an authentic guide to reading instruction for reading teachers.
