We are still following in the steps of the several counseling and psychotherapy theories for the Western, in particular for white man of middle class. In as much as multicultural counseling is becoming the fourth forces in this field at this time, the counseling theory which is suitable with the Korean has to be explored. Among the major counseling and psychotherapy theories, psycho-dynamic approach makes too much of intra-psychic conflict rather than interpersonal problems, person-centered approach lays emphasis on the self-actualization which is the most important value in Western society, and cognitive-behavior therapy stresses the rationality based on the Western culture. Thus these approaches make trouble with Korean culture which is based on vertical-collectivism. The Korean expect that counselor serves as a teacher as well as a therapist to let a client know familism and grade of rank which are stressed in our culture. For that reason, a counselor should play a role as an elder (an experienced and wise man) who can coach and guide a client. Because interpersonal relationship is quite important in our society, a role of proper parents is to make children good members of the community with an affectionate-disciplinary attitude rather than an affectionate-permissive one. And also a counselor should have objectified norms to exert an effect upon a client.
