한국인의 사회적 인정 척도와 외국인에 대한 이중적 태도 = Measures of Social Recognition in Korea and the Korean`s Double-faced Attitudes to Foreigners

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Today, most of Koreans have double-faced attitude toward foreigners. Really, in Korea, foreigners from the developed countries are an object of envy, but most Korean people often hold foreigners from undeveloped countries in contempt. The purpose of this study is to explore the sources of such double-faced attitude and its relations to (measures of) social recognition in Korea. To attain this purpose, we tried to do two kinds of social surveys. First was questionnaire, objects of which are 1500 cases(beyond 20 years) living in six big cities including Seoul. Second was in-depth interviews, the method of which was FGI(focus group interview) divided four groups according age-bracket. Findings of this study are as follows. The sources of such double-faced attitude are race, nationality, skin color, degree of ability of English-speaking, economic grade of foreigners` mother country (developed or not). But, among the sources economic grade of foreigners` mother country was the most important factor, which determines double-faced attitudes toward foreigners of Korean people. In this social context, Korean people not only hold foreigners from undeveloped countries in contempt but also display one`s own wealth and try to have an ostentation his own nationality. To conclude, we can say that this is a sort of social conspicuousness in Korea.
