Since the 5th Curriculum(1987), Social Studies curriculum has been revised to have relevancy to the respective regions(communities). And the educational authority to develop school-based curriculum was transfered to the schools from the 6th Curriculum(l992) in Korea.
For Social Studies as a subject, curriculum regionalization and school-based curriculum development should be considered complementary. However, the regionalization of the Social Studies curriculum and school-based curriculum development have been carried separately so far.
Recently, the meaning of space and region has been reconceptualized. By the new concept space and region are given the meaning emphasizing places in everyday life. This new aspect of space and region relevant to learners' everyday lives and immediate experience provides curriculum development with educationally effective conceptual tool for curriculum regionalization at the level of schools.
In this process, regionalization of the Social Studies curriculum and school-based curriculum development would be integrated. Furthermore, this process may enhance the professionalism and autonomy of educators.
