This is a report on surface investigation of prehistoric site at Whajinpo (a lagoon) area, north-eastern coast of Kangwon (江原) province, which was undertaken in October 1965 and in January 1966.
Stone implements and potsherds were collected from several sites.
All the tools are surface finds.
And 7 Dolmens were found.
Stone Implements;
Polished stone Axes, Arrow heads,
Pebble net sinkers, a stone dagger,
a spindle stone etc.
Potsherds;
Plain coarse pottary,
Polished reddish pottery,
Dolmens;
At Whapori(花浦里) two northern-type dolmens were found.
One southern-type dolmen was found at Chukchongri (竹亭里) which is situated on the road side to Sanhakri(山鶴里) near the Chukchong primary school.
At Chodori(草島里) four dolmens were found; Ⅰand Ⅳ are northern-type and Ⅱand Ⅲ are southern-type.
The Ⅲ dolmen has a comparatively flat topstone with one underground stone cist built right below the topstone. And layer of pebbles covers a rather wide area around the cist.
The southern type dolmens are usually found at southern most area. However they are also found in the North-western Korea. In north-eastern coast, the Chodori Ⅲdolmen is northernmost northern type dolmen.
