초등 영어교육을 위한 동화의 활용 = Use of storybooks in primary English teaching

국문 초록 (Abstract)

동화는 언어학습의 자료로서 많은 장점을 가지고 있다. 특히 어린이 영어교육에 활용될 경우 다양한 활동으로 연결될 수 있으며 듣기, 말하기, 읽기, 쓰기를 통합적으로 학습할 수 있게 해준다. 본 연구는 동화의 텍스트 구조상의 특성과 언어적인 면에서의 특성을 살펴보고 언어교육자료로서 동화가 어떤 장점을 가지는지 논의하고 있다. 그리고 수많은 동화책 중에서 적절한 이야기를 고르는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니므로, 내용과 구성, 동화 속에 함축된 가치관과 태도, 문화적 정보, 언어적 수준, 그림의 사용, 기타 학습을 도울 수 있는 반복적 언어 사용 등을 고려하여 학습자의 흥미와 언어 능력에 적절한 동화를 고를 수 있도록 여러 가지 기준을 제시한다. 또한 동화를 활용하는데 가장 중심이 되는 스토리텔링은 어떻게 이야기하느냐에 따라 학습 효과가 달라질 수 있는데 목소리의 크기와 억양, 높낮이를 이야기의 내용에 맞게 조절하고 속도와 얼굴표정 등에 변화를 주는 것이 흥미를 높이고 이해를 도울 수 있다. 그리고 이야기하는 과정에 학습자의 적극적인 참여를 유도하는 것도 중요하다. 그 밖의 단어와 사전 학습, 길잡이 질문의 제시 등의 내용 이해를 돕기 위한 활동, 역할 놀이나 대화의 연습 등을 통한 유창성 향상을 위한 활동, 그림이나 글로 이야기에 대한 반응을 표현하도록 하는 활동 등의 실제 이야기 중심의 수업에 활용될 수 있는 다양한 활동 들이 소개되고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Stories as language teaching and learning materials are valuable resources for language learners. When stories are used in primary English teaching, they can easily lead to various language learning activities. They also provide opportunities for students to practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and have an important role in integrating the four skills in classrooms. The purpose present study is to review the discourse organization of stories and characteristics of language use in stories. The advantages of story use as language teaching materials are also discussed. It is not an easy task to choose suitable storybooks since so many of them are available. The study presents several criteria for selecting storybooks such as content, organization, values and attitude, cultural information, language, illustrations, etc. Those criteria can be helpful for finding out appropriate books considering the students' interest and language ability level. Storytelling is the most central activity of the lesson using a story, and how a story is told is an important factor affecting the students' understanding. It is recommended to vary the pace, tone and volume of the storyteller's voice and to use gestures and facial expressions to help convey the meaning. It is also beneficial to encourage the students to take part in the storytelling. Finally, the study introduces various language learning tasks around stories that the teachers can use in classrooms.
