The purpose of this study is to investigate an effective way of developing oral English fluency and accuracy of Korean EFL learners, using a real time text chatting tool. A total of fifty-three Korean college students participated in the study. They were divided into one of three groups: control group, experimental group A (text chatting and self-correction), and experimental group B (text chatting). The major findings of the study are as follows: first, the text chatting group significantly outperformed the other two groups on speaking posttest with respect to the number of words, AS-Units, and clauses. This result indicates that the text chatting activity, as a pre-task to speaking activities, can be an effective way of improving Korean EFL learners' speaking fluency. Secondly, the text chatting and self-correction group significantly outperformed the other two groups on speaking posttest with respect to the number of errors and the ratio of error-free clauses. This demonstrates that incorporating form-focused activities into meaning-driven communicative tasks can help Korean EFL learners notice grammatical errors and improve accuracy. Thirdly, different activities of text chatting and self-correction of English errors need to be properly chosen in accordance with English proficiency levels of Korean EFL learners. Based on these findings, some pedagogical suggestions are made on effective ways of enhancing the fluency and accuracy of Korean EFL learners' speaking skills in Korean EFL classroom settings.
