This is a basic study for developing an reading program for young children based on Korean alphabetic's characteristics. In this study, the literature on the characteristics of Korean alphabet was reviewed and the teaching methods of reading for young children was exam ined.
Hangeul, which is Korean alphabet, is described in the Hunmin Jeungeum, which is a traditional Korean book on Korean alphabet.
The characteristics of Korean alphabet are as follows: Firstly, it is a very organized feature system that consists of 14 consonants and 10 vowels. Secondly, it consists of phonetic symbols. Specifically, it is a phonemic character. Thirdly, it is a combining alphabet with syllable cluster. Fourthly, the beginning consonant is used for a final consonant. Fifthly, it is an ideogram in writing. Thus, for a method for teaching young children how to read Korean alphabet, syllable writing for a syllable character is adopted even if Korean alphabet is a phonem ic character and ideography is adopted in writing even if it consists of phonetic symbols. The method should be able to meet the philosophical and scientific characteristics of Korean alphabet. Also, it should be a balanced bi-directional teaching method rather than a simple one.
