The purpose of this study was to analyze the problems of 「Teaching English in English」and to suggest their alternatives. The study employed a questionnaire survey method for 302 English teachers in secondary schools in Seoul. Frequency analysis, Cross-tabulation and ANOVA were utilized as statistical tools.
The study results showed that English teachers who participated in the study were not likely to trust the government policy of 「Teaching English in English」. The study also showed that while teachers lacked in their English communicative competency, experience and self-efficacy in 「Teaching English in English」, they were not likely to positively cope with their situations. In addition, the students' communicative competency had not been reflected in the evaluation of English scholastic achievement. The teachers' prospects on the effects of 「Teaching English in English」 were discouraging. Suggesting the idea of involving school teachers in the policy making processes, developing the programs to enhance the teachers' English communicative competency, relating the evaluation systems of secondary schools to the systems of college entrance exams, controlling the quality of English in-service training programs, this study proposed that the Korean government should show cautious attitudes toward the 「Teaching English in English」
