This paper reconstructs the intersectional life experiences of a North Korean woman who (re)migrated between North Korea, China and South Korea and is now living in South Korea. Key findings from the research can be summarized
as follows: Firstly, the case study shows the formation process of a ‘migration actor-network’ across three East Asian countries which is constructed not only by human actors (North Korean women, Korean-Chinese men, South Korean men, etc.) but also involves non-human actors (such as adoption and marriage institutions, international
marriage consultancies etc.). Secondly, this North Korean woman, who had aspired to be a socialist heroine, constructed various and contradictory identities
throughout the transnational migration process; e.g. as a food refugee, a female Korean-Chinese adoptee, a marriage migrant, a migrant worker in South
Korea, a smuggler, a ‘broker’ in North Korea, a North Korean defector, a South Korean student. As a result, her life histories refer us to various and significant
transpositions of identity. Thirdly, more than just exploring the ‘feminization of migration’ as an important topic in the area of migration research in the Korean context, the analysis shows that the ‘bodies of women’ are also instrumentalized for the migration of men. Being placed in the lowest position in the migration network between North Korea-China-South Korea, North Korean women act as
a ‘key’ for the migration of Korean-Chinese families to South Korea. Finally, this case study emphasizes that identities of migrant women cannot be reduced to marriage migrants or migrant workers, by revealing, more specifically, the complex constellation of how border crossing processes from North Korea into China
intersect with marriage migration and migrant labour in South Korea.
