The purpose of this paper focusing on population migration with spatial characteristics is 1) to analyze the relationship between migration and urban spatial characteristics of Korea, 2) to verify the existing theories concerned with migration and its determinantss by the results of the analysis, and 3) to provide the theoretical basis and directions for urban policies. The data employed is Population and Housing Census 2% sample and regional migration statistics for 1995, 2000, 2005. 83 municipal units as analysis zone including 7 metropolitan cities are used. Information, population ageing, and densification are analyzed in accordance with population migration and rate.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the results of 1995, 2000 and 2005 are consistent, that is, the relationship between commuting time and information and spatial dummy and migration is positivey. But population ageing, and densification seems that there is no theoretical relations. Second, as a new finding, the result shows that the population size and employment is strongly related to migration. Due to the some limites in analysis period, the resuts suggest that further studies focusing on Information, population ageing, and densification as migration determinants are necessary.
