Ancient people thought differently from people of the modern day, particularly with regard to their approach to religion. Notable amongst these differences is the use of a 'multiplicity of approaches' by ancient people and the way this thinking influenced their concepts of god. As a part of this multiplicity, early people often gave multiple forms, names and roles to the same god, or to the same force of nature. This belief in both the multiplicity and immanence of god or gods naturally excluded belief in transcendence. Particularly in ancient Egypt, people conceived their gods in various ways: in human form, in animal form and most often, in hybrid form comprising an animal head matched to a human body. But the animal form did not represent the god's true essence. Rather, it was a means of expressing the attributes or characteristics of a god. A study of the 'Book of the Dead' reveals interesting traits concerning men and their gods. Ancient Egyptians imposed the conditions of salvation to their gods and defined their after-world life themselves. They even intimidated their gods with regard to preparing for and protecting themselves in the after-world. These traits lead us to consider the ancient Egyptian religion as something different from monotheistic religions, something that contains its own sense of logic.
