The main purpose of this paper is to revisit the problems of a relationship ‘Author-Reader’, especially by comparing Jean-Paul Sartre and Roland Barthes. It may be surprising to see them together in parallel by addressing the hottest and the most important problem of a literary criticism. But it seems that between them there is a selective affinity particulary when an author's and a reader's status are posed in their literary theories. As it is well known, it was in 1968 that Roland Barthes declared the death of an author in his famous article entitled “The death of the author” with the transition of the concept the ‘works’ into the ‘text’. According to him, a text is considered as the production of an intertextuality, that is, as the harvest of other's voices that the author has borrowed in his creation. Therefore, the author becomes a kind of a “scripteur”. And he will become a simple guest, because he will not have the right to judge his text. In short, he will be an “auteur de papier.” By contrast, Jean-Paul Sartre pretends, in Qu'-ce que la littérature?, that the author can always go further than the reader in the interpretation of his literary work. Jean-Paul Sartre accepts that a literary work is a product of a dialectical cooperation of an author and a reader. But Jean-Paul Sartre also accepts that the literary work is a kind of alter ego of the author in the exact sense that he has put his ideas, his subjectivity, his freedom, his soul in his work. This means that in contrast to the Roland Barthe's pretention, the author is not dead but alive in his relationship with a reader. Do not forget that the birth of the reader must pay the author's death in Roland Barthes, but that, in Jean-Paul Sartre's theory, the author and the reader must be absolutely alive and cooperate intensively to make born to a literary work.
