사회적 자본과 범죄 : 사회적 자본이 폭력범죄에 미치는 영향 = Social Capital and Crime : The Effects of Social Capital on Violent Crime in Korea

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study tested the hypotheses that areas with higher levels of regional social capital will have lower violent crime rates relying upon recent criminological literature on social capital conception. Korea is a nation with moderate violent crime rates. We expect that local rates of violent crime rates vary widely. Similarly, the level of social capital provided by the local areas's resources varies throughout Korea's regions due to the level of development and socioeconomic condition. Utilizing date from Korean police district regions(n=208) and controlling for other structural covariates, Ordinary Least Squares(OLS) regression was employed to estimate the effects of social capital on violent crime rates in regions. On the same side of author's expectation, the results provided the partial support for direct effects of social capital on violent crime. The findings showed that there was significant relationship between social capital in the family(family bonding) and violent crime rates. The findings were discussed in the social and cultural contexts of regional specific conditions in Korea and of the meaning of these findings for recent research on social capital and crime.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

우리나라 범죄학의 경험적 연구들의 경향을 보면 미시적 연구가 거의 대부분을 차지하고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 이것은 범죄원인들 중에서 개인적 특성을 중심으로 하는 연구가 주종을 이룰 수밖에 없으며, 이러한 연구 경향은 결국 한국사회에서 범죄행동에 관한 사회구조적인 원인이나 집합적 수준에서의 원인분석을 위한 거시적 연구의 결여를 낳게 함은 물론이거니와, 범죄대책과 관련해서도 보다 사회구조적 접근방안에 대한 진지한 고민의 기회를 상실하는 결과를 초래하게 된다. 이 연구는 이러한 고민의 결과에서 보다 구조적인 연구의 중요성을 다시금 부각시키기 위해 최근에 많이 논의되고 있는 거시적 연구 주제들 가운데 ‘사회적 자본(social capital)’과 범죄와의 관계에 대해 조사해보고자 하였다. 따라서 이 연구는 한국의 지역(regions)을 분석단위(unit of analysis)로 사용하여 지역의 사회적 자본이 범죄율을 줄이는데 긍정적 역할을 수행하는지를 알아보고자 하는 것이다. 기존의 범죄학 문헌에 기초해 볼 때 지역의 사회적 자본의 정도와 지역별 범죄율 사이에는 부(-)적 관계가 있을 것으로 생각된다. 연구 목적을 위해 지역단위의 사회적 자본에 관한 지표를 사용하여 지역의 사회적 자본이 그 지역의 폭력범죄율에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 분석결과에서는 지역의 가족 내 사회적 자본은 폭력범죄를 감소시키는 것으로 나타난 반면에 보다 큰 사회연결망에 기초한 사회적 자본은 폭력범죄에 유의미한 영향을 주지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 가족 내 사회적 자본은 그 지역 지방정부의 사회적 지원의 수준과 상관없이 독립적으로 폭력범죄에 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과가 나오게 된 원인과 의미에 대해 우리나라의 사회구조와 문화적 맥락에 기초하여 토론하였으며, 지역의 가족 내 사회적 자본의 강화를 위한 개별적 그리고 공동체적 노력과 개선책에 대해 논의하였다.
