새터민의 민주시민교육과 평생교육의 역할 = Democratic Civic Education for North Korean Refugees and the Role of Lifelong Education

The number of North Korean refugees has increased rapidly but the education that they receive is short-term and government-sponsored education mainly aiming at social adaptation. Given that, they need more than social adaptation education; they need democratic civic education that helps them to understand the South Korean society and to realize a need to live as the subject of their lives and to contribute to the societal development as South Korean citizens. Nevertheless, since democracy in Korea is going backward at present, the author argues that lifelong education should play an important role in promoting democratic civic education for North Korean refugees. In line with it, the purpose of this study is to find out why lifelong education should play an important role and what tasks it has to promote democratic civic education for North Korean refugees. For that purpose, in this study, first, the author tries to examine what kinds of education North Korean refugees receive and what problems it has. Second, the author explores the limitations of current democratic civic education in Korea and the potential of lifelong education in promoting democratic civic education for the refugees. Third, the author investigates what kinds of tasks lifelong education is confronted with in order to promote democratic civic education for North Korean refugees.
