결혼상태의 지속 및 변화가 노인의 건강에 미치는 영향 -경제자원 및 사회적 관계망의 매개효과 검증- = The effects of marital status on health among older adults: The mediating effects of economic resources and social networks

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Using data from Korean Longitudinal Study on Aging (KLoSA), this study examines how continuity and change of marital status is associated with health over time, focusing on the mediating effects of economic resources and social networks. KLoSA data set has two waves of interviews, and for this study, 3510 aged 65 and over were selected. The major findings are as follows. First, there was no statistically significant difference in health between continuously married older adults and continuously single older adults. However, older adults who had transition from being married to being single showed lower mental health than continuously married older adults. Also, they showed lower physical and mental health, and self-rated health than continuously single older adults. Second, the mediating effect of contact with children on the association between marital status and mental health was supported. Third, the mediating effect of contact with friends/neighbors on the association between marital status and mental health and self-rated heath was confirmed. Lastly, the roles of economic resources and social networks in the effects of marital status on health differ depending upon the sub-dimension of health. In conclusion, the findings of this study show the different pathways through which marital status is associated with health for 3 different groups of older adults, being continuously single, being continuously married, and making transition from being married to being single.
