Current economic education in Korea aims at educating scholars to be members of society with a sense of responsibility who are able to manage and to live a holistically intelligent economic life through logical judgments and rational choices. But school education has centered on theories and principals about the economy. Extended education outside of the school system has been constructedto make up for the theory-centric education of the school system.
However, the extended education outside of schools does suffer from similar problems to that of the school system of economic education. It appears to be bound to the capital city area, and, persistent doubts of the professionalism, trustworthiness and reputations of its instructors. Today, the local economic education center has drawn attention as it is one of the extended education locations
It has developed a consumer-centered program by making up for the problems of the extended education out of school and vitalized the economic education within the relevant district. Faults like a budgetary deficit, a shortage of exclusive manpower and problems in maintaining a program in a district center have been exposed. However it is possible to take corrective steps to overcome these exposed flaws.
Following are some suggestions for regional development of the local economic education center. Firstly, the local economic education center can expand its organization through continuous compilation of the budget and the budgetary increasefor the education center. If the center were to have two more exclusive officers in managerial positions, with the exception of the chief of the center, the center could research and develop the economy, and train qualified instructors. Secondly, the local economic education center should re-evaluate its role. The center can expand the development program and operate it by cooperating with organizations and groups of economic education in and out-of-school.
And also the center-led programs should be developed and distributed. Thirdly, the center should strive to distinguish between education programs for youths and adults. For adults, it should provide solid and useful information, and for youths, it should direct education to instill sound economic habits. Lastly, the center should allow for the promotion and training of economic professionals. If the local center were to evaluate economically relevant experts, they could be trained as instructors with professionalism, trustworthiness and highly regarded reputations at the local economic education center.
