청소년참여의 유형화 연구 = A Study on the Typologies of Youth Participation

This study analyzes the conceptual nature of youth participation and the various typologies of youth participation by grouping into hierarchical level models and non-hierarchical continuum models. Youth patricipation is defined as a process that involves young people in the decisions that affect their lives. The hierarchical level models are proposed by Arnstein, Hart, and Checkoway focusing on the hierarchical distinction between levels of participation as steps on a ladder model. These typologies have been criticized as they suggest a hierarchy with the objective being to reach the highest level. The non-hierarchical continuum models are suggested by Fitzpatrick, Laidlaw Foundation, and Pretty as alternatives or supplemental understandings of participation based on the criticism of hierarchical step models. It is emphasized that the level of youth participation will vary depending on the decisions involved and the capability and choice of the young people. Meaningful participation must be seen as a process of involvement with adults not simply an isolated activity or event.
