사이버공간에서의 자아인식과 복합정체성 수행

국문 초록 (Abstract)

익명성과 개방성을 특징으로 하는 사이버공간의 등장으로 오랫동안 사회과학계가 견지해 온 안정적이고 고정적인 자아의 가정이 그 뿌리에서부터 흔들리고 있다. 인터넷 이용시간이 증가하고 개인의 사이버공간 활동 비중이 커지면서 자아는 안정되고 예측 가능한 실체가 아니라 지속적으로 재구성되는 유동적 존재로 변모하고 있기 때문이다. 본고의 목적은 ‘복합정체성’으로 명명되는 사이버공간의 자아인식과 정체성 수행의 조건을 탐색하고 그 주요 수단과 방법을 검토하며 기본 성격과 작동 메커니즘을 해부하는 것이다. 연구 결과, 오늘날 정보통신기술의 발달과 사회문화 변동의 가속화로 자아정체성의 준거가 ‘성찰성’에서 ‘표출성’으로 전환되었다. 표출적 자아는 미드의 수동적이고 객체적인 ‘Me’보다는 능동적이고 주체적인 ‘I’를 지향하며, ‘사회적 정체성’보다는 ‘개인적 정체성’의 서사에 더 많은 관심을 기울인다. 또한 표출적 자아는 자신의 육체·감정·생각을 표현하는 것을 중시하는 반면 내면적 성찰에는 소극적이며, 밀도 있는 관계보다는 ‘얕고 약한’ 관계를 지향한다. 이는 사이버공간의 행위자들이 보여주는 소통성·전시성·유희성·기만성에서 명증이 확인된다. 이 같은 복합정체성과 다중자아의 시대에 그것의 순기능을 강화하고 역기능을 줄이기 위해서는, 첫째, 사이버공간의 수많은 부분 자아들을 그것이 구성되는 맥락 속에 적절히 위치지우고 맥락내적 역할 기대에 상응하게 행동하도록, 즉 맥락 합리적으로 행동하도록 고무해야 한다. 둘째, 사이버공간의 부분자아들에 대한 본래자아의 책임성과 주도성을 높여야 한다. 그 출발점은 오프라인 세계의 본래자아의 중심적 위상에 대한 자각, 본래자아와 사이버공간의 분절화된 대리자아들 간의 유기적 연결과 소통, 나아가 물리적 현실과 차단된 채 사이버공간에 폐쇄되어 있는 부분자아들 간의 통섭과 내부 소통 강화라고 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The advent and expansion of cyberspace which is often characterized by terminologies like anonymity or openness is breaching the supposition of the self as a stable, predictable, unique entity which has been fundamentally approved in social science for a long time. Along with the increase of time in the use of the Internet and the revitalization of e-life, self-identity is transfiguring into a fluid existence which is reconstructing itself continuously. Accordingly, the divergence and multiplicity of the identity is becoming a new and popular issue in the discourse of contemporary social science. This paper aims, first, to be an overview for the conditions of the identity forming and reforming process in cyberspace which is called "multiple identity", second, to explore the main means and methods of this process, and finally, to analyse characteristics and performing strategies of the "multiple identity". Results of this research show that along with informatization, the reference point of self-identity has shifted from "reflexiveness" to ‘expressiveness". The expressive self of cyberspace tends to orient itself to an active subjective "I" rather than to a passive objective "me", and is more interested in the narration of personal identity than of that of social identity. The personal identity gives priority to the expression of its own body, feeling and inner world. On the other side, the expressive self tends to disregard deliberation. It is also inclined to form a "weak" and "thin" relationship among cyber-selves in comparison to a close human relationship. We can confirm theses aspects of the personal identity in the communicative, deceitful, playful and display-oriented self which young netizens perform in cyberspace. What is required to strengthen the eufunctions of multiple identity and ease its dysfunctions? First, the promotion of the sub-selves of cyberspace to behavior more "context-rationally" is needed. Second, responsibility and initiative of the original self in the off-line world over the sub-selves in cyberspace should be stepped up. Consciousness of the central position of the original self in the off-line world, organic connectedness and inner-communication between the off-line original self and fragmented sub-selves or alternative selves in cyberspace is necessary, and further, discourses and communications among cyber-selves could be a point of good departure.
